Date: 1990-05-15
Locality: USA, New Mexico, Lincoln, About 1 mile west of the Valley of Fires State Park entrance on the Carrizozo - San Antonio road. North side.
Substrate: Soils shallow, derived from parent lava material.
Description: These flowers appear morphologically to be male sterile having smaller, shrivelled anthers without any visible pollen. Fruit set occurs exclusively in such individuals (vide # 4). Sex ratios between these "females" and the "males" in the population appear not to differ significantly from a 1:1 relationship. A high incidence of flower bud and flower abortion was observed here and fruit set in 29 marked female plants was 22% (+/- 28%).
