Soils shallow, derived from parent lava material.
These flowers appear morphologically to be male sterile having smaller, shrivelled anthers without any visible pollen. Fruit set occurs exclusively in such individuals (vide # 4). Sex ratios between these "females" and the "males" in the population appear not to differ significantly from a 1:1 relationship. A high incidence of flower bud and flower abortion was observed here and fruit set in 29 marked female plants was 22% (+/- 28%).
