USA, ARIZONA, La Paz, Alamo Dam SE 7.5' USGS topographic quadrangle; Harcuvar Mountains, 20km north of Wenden, immediately above and to the south of Dripping Spring.
Frequent but not abundant (ca. 100 individuals seen) cespitose shrub to 3dm tall; spines gray to black, at least when young, and variable with respect to length; just now coming into bud (12 March); this particular individual with very long, dark spines; pollen-fertile; flowers (2) photographed and pressed 24 April 2004 from individual transplanted to Chino Valley, Arizona; n=22 from meiosis of microgametogenesis; young anthers magenta becoming pale yellow with age probably owing to the dehiscence of the anthers.
